When Cheryl brought the fawn home, Sarge did not panic. He sensed something and felt the fawn as his sibling. He came forward to care for the poor animal. Cheryl is surprised by Sarge’s actions. She named the deer Buckwheat. Cheryl said that something clicked in Sarge, and he took to Buckwheat instantly. He desired to be involved in every stage of caring for Buckwheat and took on the role of Buckwheat’s guardian.
Sarge and Buckwheat’s friendship
Sarge, known for his friendly and gentle demeanor, quickly took an interest in the little deer. Despite his size and strength, he approached the deer with a wagging tail and a friendly bark, clearly trying to comfort the animal. The deer, likely sensing Sarge’s kind nature, was not afraid and soon began to follow the German Shepherd, seeking his protection and comfort.

Buckwheat got well
Over the next several days, Sarge and the deer became inseparable. Sarge always stayed close to the deer, keeping him safe and protected from any potential danger. The deer would often snuggle up next to Sarge, using him as a pillow, and Sarge seemed to relish the caretaker role, showering the deer with affection and attention. Sarge was thrilled to guide the deer as he recovered and stood up again, and Buckwheat stuck close to him like his older brother. Cheryl said that Sarge would walk by Buckwheat’s side and prevent him from getting lost when they took him outside.
Sarge made new friends.
In time, Buckwheat matured. He eventually reached the stage where he was too big for the house and no longer needed Sarge’s assistance. He was now prepared to go back to the outdoors. What happened to Sarge? When Buckwheat, there were many other deer at Cheryl’s house for him to look after. And Sarge treated them like he treated Buckwheat, with love and care.

Sarge continued to assist Cheryl as she cared for and treated injured and abandoned deer. They offer the deer all the care and affection they can, even though some do not survive. When she walked in the door carrying a fawn, Cheryl said that Sarge sprang into action. He wanted to check them over and frantically sniffed and nose around to determine their condition. She also said the fawns were drawn to Sarge and felt safe in his presence. Sarge stayed on their side.
